However, these days, companies are also recognising the media value of the annual report, which is the main vehicle of corporate reporting, and are concluding that it’s an efficient means of communication between the business and their stakeholders. Corporate reporting also assists in building image.     Dieser Tagungsband dokumentiert Ergebnisse der Herbsttagung des Arbeitskreises Grundschule in der Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM) in Tabarz vom 8. bis 10. November 2013 zum Thema „Mathematik vernetzt“. Das Rahmenthema der Tagung „Mathematik vernetzt“ wurde in fünf Hauptvorträgen im Plenum diskutiert. Zusätzlich setzten sich Arbeitsgruppen zu den klassischen Themenfeldern Arithmetik, Geometrie, Sachrechnen und Daten, Zufall & Wahrscheinlichkeit sowie Gruppen zu den Bereichen Kommunikation & Kooperation, Vorschulische Bildung, Lehren & Forschen mit Neuen Medien in der Primarstufe und Lehrerfortbildung intensiv mit aktuellen Forschungs- und Praxisfragen auseinander.The Proceedings of the 2013 Conference of the Research Group on Primary Mathematics Education (Arbeitskreis Grundschule in der GDM) focus on networked mathematics.     Early respiratory morbidity in a multicultural birth cohort: The Generation R Study

    Ethnic disparities in the prevalence of asthma symptoms in children have been described. We evaluated to what extent the association between ethnic background and respiratory symptoms during the first 2 years of life could be explained by the mediating effect of risk factors for respiratory morbidity. The Generation R Study is a multiethnic, population-based birth cohort study. Pre and postnatal risk factors for respiratory morbidity were prospectively assessed by questionnaires. Information about ethnicity was available for 5,684 infants. The associations between ethnic background and lower respiratory symptoms at 12 and 24 months were evaluated with logbinomial regression models. Relative risks and 95 % confidence intervals (RR [95 % CI]) were computed for Cape Verdean, Moroccan, Antillean, Surinamese and Turkish ethnicity with Dutch ethnicity as the reference category. We found an increased risk of lower respiratory symptoms at 24 months in Antillean infants (1.32 [95 % CI 1.12-1.57]) that was mediated by early postnatal exposures (pets keeping, siblings, breastfeeding, daycare attendance, smoke exposure). Turkish infants also had an increased risk of lower respiratory symptoms at 12 and 24 months (1.14 [95 % CI 1.02-1.27] and 1.21 [95 % CI 1.07-1.38], respectively), partly explained by previous morbidity (eczema, infections and upper respiratory symptoms). There were no differences for Cape Verdean, Moroccan or Surinamese, as compared to Dutch infants. Hence, ethnic background was associated with respiratory symptoms during the first 2 years of life and this association was largely explained by mediating effects of known pre and postnatal risk factors for respiratory morbidity

    Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children

    Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children.</p

    The Generation R Study: design and cohort update 2010

    The Generation R Study is a population-based prospective cohort study from fetal life until young adulthood. The study is designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes of normal and abnormal growth, development and health during fetal life, childhood and adulthood. The study focuses on four primary areas of research: (1) growth and physical development; (2) behavioural and cognitive development; (3) diseases in childhood; and (4) health and healthcare for pregnant women and children. In total, 9,778 mothers with a delivery date from April 2002 until January 2006 were enrolled in the study. General follow-up rates until the age of 4 years exceed 75%. Data collection in mothers, fathers and preschool children included questionnaires, detailed physical and ultrasound examinations, behavioural observations, and biological samples. A genome wide association screen is available in the participating children. Regular detailed hands on assessment are performed from the age of 5 years onwards. Eventually, results forthcoming from the Generation R Study have to contribute to the development of strategies for optimizing health and healthcare for pregnant women and children

    Activation of Humoral Immunity during the Pathogenesis of Experimental Chronic Lung Allograft Dysfunction

    Alloreactive and autoreactive antibodies have been associated with the development of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), but their pathogenic role is disputed. Orthotopic left lung transplantation was performed in the Fischer-344 to Lewis rat strain combination followed by the application of ciclosporine for 10 days. Four weeks after transplantation, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was instilled into the trachea. Lungs were harvested before (postoperative day 28) and after LPS application (postoperative days 29, 33, 40, and 90) for histopathological, immunohistochemical, and Western blot analyses. Recipient serum was collected to investigate circulating antibodies. Lung allografts were more strongly infiltrated by B cells and deposits of immunoglobulin G and M were more prominent in allografts compared to right native lungs or isografts and increased in response to LPS instillation. LPS induced the secretion of autoreactive antibodies into the circulation of allograft and isograft recipients, while alloreactive antibodies were only rarely detected. Infiltration of B cells and accumulation of immunoglobulin, which is observed in allografts treated with LPS but not isografts or native lungs, might contribute to the pathogenesis of experimental CLAD. However, the LPS-induced appearance of circulating autoreactive antibodies does not seem to be related to CLAD, because it is observed in both, isograft and allograft recipients
